Community Council meet Planning Officials
Representatives from Fethard & Killusty Community Council attended a meeting at County Hall, Clonmel, on Tuesday September 20th, to discuss issues raised in their submission in relation to the proposed Housing Development at Strylea / Rocklow Road.  This meeting was chaired by Ms Sinead Carr, Director of Services – Housing.  The following personnel from South Tipperary County Council contributed to the meeting: Messrs John Moloney and Ger Walsh, Housing; Mr Richard Bowen, Planning and Mr Kevin O’Connor, Forward Planning.  The meeting was also attended by Cllr. John Fahey, Cllr. Michael O’Brien, Cllr. Susan Meagher and Deputy Tom Hayes TD.

Edwina Newport, Secretary, on behalf of the Community Council, outlined their concerns both in respect of the current proposal of twenty houses and ten private sites and the longer-term proposal regarding a far more substantial development.  The Community Council are of the opinion that the smaller-scale development should not be considered or proceeded with until the larger-scale proposal has been considered and, at a minimum, the outlines of the proposals in the Master Plan for the adjacent area are clear.  The Community Council considers it unsatisfactory for a development of substantial scale in this area to take place in an isolated manner.  Edwina also expressed the view that some of the aspects of the larger-scale development are not in conformity with certain provisions of the County Development Plan 2003 and are at variance with policies and objectives of the Fethard Local Area Plan 2005.

With reference to the genuine fears of the community posed by the current proposal, Joe Kenny expressed concerns about the concentration, to date, of all public housing in the one area and the polarisation of various sectors of the community in the town.  He also voiced the dismay of the Community Council in relation to the apparent disregard to many of their opinions / suggestions, concerning current and future development in Fethard, previously submitted to a number of sections of the County Council.

Ms Sinead Carr informed the meeting that matters raised in the submission would be considered, she mooted the idea of convening a public meeting to discuss current social issues in Fethard and stated that the current housing proposal (twenty houses and ten sites) has been forwarded to the Planning section for their attention.

Mr Richard Bowen explained that the Planning section will consider all aspects of the proposal including observations and submissions received.  When their decision is made a report will be compiled and forwarded to the County Manager and to a subsequent Council (South Tipp. Co. Co.) meeting.

With the assistance of John Quinn, Director of Community Enterprise, and Margo Hayes, RAPID South East, a public meeting is being arranged provisionally for mid-October in the Abymill Theatre at which the relevant planning personnel and officials will attend to answer questions.  Further details later.

Foreman Tom moves to Killenaule

Fethard Tidy Towns made a presentation to Thomas Fitzgerald, Area Foreman with South Tipperary County Council, to mark his transfer from the Fethard Area to Killenaule.  Thomas, a very popular and obliging man, has worked in conjunction with the Fethard & Killusty Community Council and other local groups to provide a very satisfactory service to the area using available resources from South Tipperary County Council.  Together with Fethard Area Engineer, Jonathon Cooney, Tom has attended monthly meetings at the Tirry Community Centre to discuss the needs of the area and prioritise the workload as available funds allow.  These meetings have proved very satisfactory and are also attended by local councillors, Susan Meagher, John Fahey, Michael O’Brien, and the relevant Council Officials as needs dictate.

We wish Tom the best of luck in his new job and look forward to working with James Horan, the new foreman appointed to take Tom’s place.  The presentation to Tom was made at the last monthly meeting held in the Tirry Community Centre.

Fethard GAA Club
The Intermediate Hurling South Final was played last Sunday 25th September in Kilsheelan and went to extra time. We were unfortunate to loose this game by a single point when most observers were definite that a replay would have been the call at the end of normal time, especially in a South Final, with extra time applying to a replay only.  But, as a result of pressure from GAC and with Munster Club Championships in every grade, the show must move on regardless and hence we move on to quarterfinal of the County Championship with a game on Saturday 1st October against Moycarkey Borris in Cashel.  Back to Sunday last — well done to the Davins, winning on a scoreline, Fethard 0-21, Carrick Davins 2-16.  The Fethard team who did us proud so far were: Paul Fitzgerald, Shane Walsh, Stephen O’Donnell, Michael Carroll, Tomás Keane 0-1, Michael Aherne, Jamie McCormack, Aiden Fitzgerald 0-4, Michael Dillon 0-2, Kenneth O’Donnell 0-3, John P Looby, Brian Coen 0-1, Kieran Treacy 0-8F, Michael Ryan, Karl Maher 0-1. Subs used were: Cian Maher 0-1, Willie Morrissey, Alan Burke, and Alan Phelan. Best of Luck on Saturday!

Under 21 B Hurling continues next Sunday, 2nd October, when we play Cahir in Monroe at 4.30pm.

County Board Draw presentations were a great success in the Bridge Bar Fethard on Saturday 26th September with Local recipients to the fore:

(B) Sean Harrington, Castlehiggins, €3,000 (Lotto Jackpot 25th Sept)
(C) Denis O’Meara, Knockbrack, €200 (Confined Draw 9th Sept)
(D) Josie Fitzgerald, Kiltinan, €500 (Promoter 1st Prize)
(E) Seamus Hackett, Strylea, €200 (Promoter Lotto Jackpot)

County Board Draw tickets are still available from any promoter at a cost of €10 per month.  Please give your support, as Sean Kelly our president stated over the weekend, the ‘Give All Association’.  So thanks again to all the people who give of their free time to help our National Games particularly at local level to the Fethard GAA Club.

Our Lotto Jackpot of €3,000 was not won. The draw was made at the Fethard Arms numbers were 5, 16, 18 and 26.  We had one match three winner of €150 to C. W. McGarry (10 Woodvale Walk) with the €50 Lucky Dip going to Lilly Maher (Kilnockin Road).

Our sympathies are at this time with Fr AB Kennedy and his family on their recent tragedy with the loss of his dad Sean in a traffic accident in England. Go ndeana Dia trocaire orthu.

Successful summer for Killusty Brothers

Seamus and Matthew Holohan from Killusty photographed with some of their trophies

Seamus and Matthew Holohan from Killusty have enjoyed a very successful summer competing with their ponies in showjumping and pony club events.  Recently in the Waterford Pony Club One-Day Event on 27th August, Matthew was the winner of the two under-12 competitions with 'Dawn Lady Rosie' and 'Shangan Crystal Boy', with Seamus coming second in one of them on 'Boolagh Shotgun'.  On the 18th September at the Whites Cross Chanty Show in Cork, Seamus was the winner of the 128cms ABC Showjumping on 'Dawn Lady Rosie' and the 128cms CD Showjumping on 'Boolagh Little Dixie'.

Old Music — Modern Dance
An appreciative, and at times bemused, audience were treated to an unusual performance in the Abymill Theatre on Friday night last, 23rd September, at an event hosted by the Fethard Historical Society.

Appropriately titled, 'Movement and Music from the Wild Side', the modern dance part was performed by Tara Brandel, now living in London but with West Cork connections, and the music by Sarah Cunningham, an American now living in West Cork. Sarah played a Viola da Gamba, an instrument first used back in the sixteen hundreds — around the time Fethard 's Town Hall was originally built. As the evening began with a cheese and wine reception (kindly sponsored by Centra) and with medieval music in the air, the audience got a feel of what a 'Disco' must have sounded like when the first dances were held in the Town Hall!

Sean Kennedy

We record the death of Sean Kennedy, formerly from Burke Street, Fethard, who was killed in a traffic accident in England on Wednesday 21st September. Our deepest sympathy to his wife Angela Kennedy and their family, Mary, June and A.B.

Remains arrived from Shannon Airport at 4.30pm on Wednesday 28th September and Holy Trinity Parish Church Fethard at 7.30pm. Requiem Mass took place at 11am on Thursday followed by burial in Calvary Cemetery.
