Weather shines for Music Extravaganza
Sunday last saw the second ‘Music Extravaganza’ run in Fethard in aid of the Tipperary Branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association. The weather obliged with brilliant sunshine in the lovely setting of Lonergan’s Beer Garden under the shade of Fethard’s Town Wall. A huge ‘thank you’ to all the seven bands who provided their services free of charge for the day. The quality of music was fantastic and was enhanced even more by the ‘gig rig’ supplied and manned by Premier Music staff, Clonmel.

Customarily planned as a ‘Family Day’, this year was no exception where children of all ages enjoyed the bouncy castle and face painting with barbecue food supplied by Peter Stocksborough and his staff. The organising committee of the IWA would like to thank all who helped out on the day in particular John and Roseanne Carroll who provided the premises and prepared the venue for wheelchair access. Thanks also to Helen Carrigan who sponsored a prize of two nights bed and breakfast with evening meal at Clonacody House. This proved a very attractive main prize for the raffle. Lastly thanks to MC and DJ for the afternoon, evening and night, Roger Mehta (Roger Brown) who was the perfect host and anchor throughout the day.

Hello from Ethiopia
Catherine Corcoran, a member of Fethard & Killusty Community Council and Fethard Business & Tourism Group, earlier this year availed of the wonderful opportunity to take some time out and work with Concern in Ethiopia. Catherine has travelled extensively while working with Concern in the past and this time has promised to keep us in touch with her work in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is a really fascinating place full of so many contrasts. There is a huge amount of construction going on everywhere – huge glass buildings being built from medieval wooden scaffolding – like on the North Gate I suppose. And in front of all these glass buildings are holes in the road, herds of sheep and goats, beggars and blind people, hoards of people in white robes going to church, kids selling everything, shoe shiners galore, kids in hoodies on mobiles, a few bewildered looking tourists-you name it, its here. It is certainly vibrant and exciting if tiring too with traffic and all those contrasts you have to brace yourself a bit.

Work is going great so far; Concern has a big programme here – over 250 staff involved in nutrition, agriculture, income generation, soil conservation, water and HIV/Aids. There is a very good and experienced team who seem to know what to do in most situations – which I suppose is no surprise as the organisation is here 40 years and there are lots of very talented Ethiopians working in Development work. Just as well as the problems here are huge – 85 million people depending mostly on agriculture; tiny land holdings; droughts and floods happening one after the other; very poor services and a huge young population to serve. On the plus side Government staff work hard generally at their jobs and we assist where we can; there are 2 harvests every year of wonderful produce; the largest livestock herd in Africa is here and set to grow and most importantly it is peaceful. And the people are very warm and lovely – very proud of their culture.

I am off for a week up North on Wednesday so looking forward to that. All the very best to my friends in Fethard. – Catherine.

Medieval Mix Up
This week is National Heritage Week the traditional time that Fethard Medieval Festival was held over the past few years. This year the Medieval Festival was held earlier in June to coincide with the Fethard Gathering Festival with the approval of the Heritage Council who fund the event. Unfortunately many visitors were unaware of the change and came to Fethard on Sunday last to attend the Medieval Festival. Jolly’s Café on The Square reported that at least nine people travelled from various places as far away as Wexford stating the Festival was still being advertised as part of Heritage Week on some websites. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and for any wrong information that was made available online not under our control.

Tipperary Women’s Mini Marathon
North & South Tipperary Sports Partnerships have come together to organise the Tipperary Women’s Mini Marathon which is now in its 4th year. The event takes place on Sunday, September 29, in Clonmel at 11am and follows a 10k route through the streets of the town.
Since the inaugural event in 2010, many charity groups have used the event as a much-needed fundraiser for their own individual causes. This event provides each charity with the opportunity to have a 10k fundraiser, without the time and financial cost of organising an event of this nature.

We would like to invite you to utilise our Tipperary Women’s Mini Marathon as a fundraiser for your charity. All you need to do is register your willing participants at www.tippminimarathon.ie or by contacting the STSP office at (062) 64737. The fee for participation in the event is €20 per person however; an early bird offer of €15 is available up to September 2. As an added incentive the organising committee will make a charitable donation of €200 to the largest charity fundraising group to register. Please contact Valerie Connolly, Sports Co-ordinator, should you have any queries.
