George Plant 70th Anniversary Commemoration
The 70th anniversary commemoration of the death of local IRA volunteer General George Plant was held in glorious sunshine at St Johnstown on Sunday last, March 4. Master of ceremonies on the day was Cllr Liam Walsh, Sinn Fein, who proceeded by inviting Mick ‘Avic’ O’Leary to lay a wreath on the grave of George Plant. A very interesting oration was then delivered by Dr. Ruan Ó Donnell, senior lecturer in history at Limerick University. This was followed by a rendition of ‘The Ballad of George Plant’ by Eamon Fogarty and ‘Amhrán na bhFiann’ played by the Carrick-on-Suir Republican Flute Band.

Special guest on the day was George Plant (junior) who travelled from his home in Bantry to attend the commemoration and was greeted with loud applause. He thanked all those involved over the years for their dedication to the memory of his late father.

The event was attended by a great local following and many others supporters who travelled from various parts of Ireland to be present. Following the commemoration, all present were invited to Fethard Ballroom for refreshments.

Fethard Water Mains Rehabilitation work to commence
Work on Fethard Mains Rehabilitation - Site Investigation and Service Identification Contract – will commence in Fethard town next week. There will be 'slit trenches' excavated across the streets and backfilled again involving three crews working for 4 to 5 weeks. Due to archaeological potential a Ministerial Consent for excavations was obtained on June 16, 2011. The work will be monitored by archaeologists Jo Moran and David Pollock and it will contain some test trenches for archaeological finds.

The three following ‘Lucky Dip’ winners also won €50 each: John O'Flynn, Online Ticket; Liam O'Connor, Knockelly Road, Fethard; and Gerard Lawless, Crampscastle, Fethard.

The next Lotto draw will take place on March 7, and you can also purchase your lotto ticket online at www.fethard.com. Buy seven weekly tickets and get one free! Fethard Ladies Football Club
The Under 16B championship got underway on Sunday, March 4, with the first round played in Bansha against Galtee Rovers. It was a tough but good-spirited game, with both sides coming away with a few knocks and bumps. Galtee Rovers put up a very strong defence which really tested us, but they were able to counter-attack at pace forcing Ciara Tillyer to make at least three superb saves from point-blank range. In the end, the Fethard girls held out for a win, and now look forward to Round 2 against Aherlow. Well done girls!

Our Last Man Standing competition continues to throw up a few surprises as some of the big teams falter. Anyone picking Chelsea is now out of the competition, and so too is anyone who took a gamble on either Sunderland or Newcastle after their drawn game on Sunday. There are still plenty of people left in the competition, so best of luck over the next few weeks.

We are still collecting the ‘GoPlayToday’ tokens on page two of the Irish Independent to help us get a free Sports Equipment kit worth €500 for the Club. We'd be very grateful if you could collect the tokens with us, and give them to any member of the club committee. If you want to find more details on this, or anything else about the club, you should take a look at our ‘Fethard Ladies Football’ page on Facebook.

Rugby - A fantastic game from Fethard U17 v Cashel
Our U17 boys came up against a very big and strong Cashel team and played a tremendous game that did them proud!

Fethard got off to a good start but Cashel got the first score with a try. Joss Murray, Tadhg Fogarty and Willie Morgan combined to put Adam O'Connell through for our first try. Our pack put in great effort and won a penalty which Joss converted. Adam Fitzgerald benefited from the hard work of the backs resulting in a brilliant try. Joss went on to convert. Keith Bergin our scrum half had a great game linking our forwards and backs and making try saving tackles, well done Keith.

In the second half our forwards upped their game, making it possible for Joss to make a fantastic break to score a great try which he followed up with a conversion. Our back row of Cian O'Connell, Ger Gorey, Paul Butler with the help of Joey Purtill and Liam O'Brien did a huge amount of work keeping Cashel out. Shane Cleere, Cathal O'Donnell, James Burns and Adam Keeley put in a huge amount of work also.

It was a very exciting game for the parents and spectators to watch and this result now puts us through to the semi-final away to Clanwilliam next weekend. Our boys will need to continue to put in a big effort and all the fantastic support from family and friends is really appreciated.
