Fr. Joe Walsh O.S.A. Celebrates Golden Jubilee
Fr. Joe Walsh O.S.A. recently returned to Ireland from Australia to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Priesthood with his Augustinian Brothers and members of his family at The Augustinian Abbey in Fethard on July 11th and in St. Joseph the Worker Church, Moyglass on Sunday 18th with his family, relations and friends.

Born in the Glen of Aherlow on September 29th, 1932, the young Joe Walsh attended Stonepark National School.  The Walsh family moved to Kilconnell, Fethard, in February 1942 where he continued his schooling at Mockershill N.S. followed by a few years in the Patrician Brothers School in Fethard.  Joe finished his secondary education at the Augustinian College, Dungarvan.  Before joining the Augustinian Order and entering the Novitiate Joe was engaged in the Bar, Wine, Grocery and Hardware Trade in Mullingar and Dublin.

Having completed his Novitiate Joe did his early studies in Dublin and then went to Rome, to complete his Theological Studies, where he was ordained to the Priesthood on the 10th July 1960, by Cardinal Traglia at the Sacred Heart Church, Piazza Navona.  On his return to Ireland in June 1961 he did three months of pastoral work in the Archdiocese of Dublin and since November 1961 he has spent all his time in Australia in Pastoral Ministry, except for three and a half years (1977 – 1981) when he returned to St. Augustine’s Priory, Callan, to be near his mother in her final illness.

Fr. Joe was able to enjoy the special occasion of his Golden Jubilee in the company of family members, his sister, Peggy O’Dea, and brothers, Michael, Christy, John and Jimmy, his nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.  Indeed the occasion was made all the more special by Fr. Joe being joined on the altar, in both the Abbey and Moyglass, by his nephew, also Fr. Joe, son of John and Nancy Walsh, who is curate in the parish of Glengoole Gortnahoe.  In Moyglass on Sunday 18th the Altar Servers were Maria and Brendan Walsh, the next generation of Walsh’s to reside in Kilconnell.
Fr. Joe returns to Australia, where he is semi-retired at Villanova College, at the end of August.  We wish him many more years of fruitful ministry in the Vineyard of the Lord.

Junior Stock Champion (Photograph – Graham Meagher)
Graham Meagher has been making a name for himself at Tipperary Motor Speedway since his first outing on the track two years ago as a Junior Stock Racer.  This season Graham has shown enormous potential in his Mk2 Fiesta.  His impressive collection of silverware is evidence of his natural talent behind the wheel.  The highlight of the season however, came last Sunday 11th July when all the hard work paid off as Graham soared past the competition to take the chequered flag in the final of the Junior Stock Championship 2010.  A well deserved victory for the Meagher racing team.  Well done Graham!

Recent Death
The news of the recent tragic death of Aideen O’Donnell, following a road accident, came as a great shock to the Fethard community.  Aideen, daughter of Ann and Pat O'Donnell, Kilconnell, Fethard, attended the Patrician Presentation Secondary School in Fethard and maintained her many school friendships since completing her Leaving Cert in 2001.  In recent times she was a short-time member of the staff of Nano Nagle School and had just completed her teaching studies at Mary Immaculate College Limerick.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the O'Donnell family and to Aideen's relatives and friends.  Requiem Mass took place at St. John The Baptist Church, Cashel, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery.
