FETHARD NOTES ARCHIVE

Saturday 7th June 2003

Submitted to The Nationalist Newspaper

FETHARD A.C.
Pat Heffernan continued his domination of the county road-racing scene by recording another victory in the recent Borrisoleigh 5K. Pat’s winning time was 15 min. 40 sec. This bodes well for next Friday night’s Thurles 5K where the Fethard man will start as hot favourite.
Meanwhile our juveniles had another successful outing at the County A Championships held in Moyne last weekend. Medal winners on the day were Aisling Dwyer who won gold in the 4x100m, Ida Carroll silver in the 4x100m, Aisling O’Connor bronze in both the 4x100m and long jump, Lolo Trehy, silver in the 80m and long jump and gold in the relay, Fiona O’Connor, silver in the 4x100m, Roisín Trehy gold in the 80m and 300m, silver in the long jump and 4x100m and Aoife O’Connor who was 2nd in the 800m, 3rd in the long jump and won gold in the 4x100m relay.

THE WELL GOLF SOCIETY
Our next outing is on Sunday June 15th, at Carrick-on-Suir Golf Club. We intend to have our first ‘three-person-rumble’ competition. Once again we are asking players to arrive no later than 10.30am. Last sign in is at 11 o' clock. Players arriving after this time may not be guaranteed a place in the competition. Tee off is at 11.15am and as usual, new players and non-members are most welcome. So, let's get ready to rumble!

PUBLICATION ON FETHARD
Mr Joe Nixon, Community Services Officer, County Tipperary, has published a book, “The Effects of Government Employment Interventions of Fethard to Tipperary Since 1977”. Joe made a very comprehensive study of his subject as his thesis for his B.A. degree in Training and Education with University College Galway. The resulting publication gives a very in-depth account of the economic and social conditions prevailing in Fethard during the period covered. The book, bound in hard back, will not be on sale publicly. Mr Nixon will however, present a copy to the people of Fethard through the Fethard and Killusty Community Council.

MARRIED RECENTLY
The wedding took place at Ballyneale Church on Saturday last of Kim, daughter of Mr John and Mrs Joan Barrett, Market Hill, to Mr. Ambrose Hanrahan.

PILGRIMS
A special coach brought a number of Fethard people to Graigcullen, Co. Carlow, on Sunday last to visit the relics of St. Anthony at the St. Clare Church. A good many also travelled to Carlow by car. The Fethard pilgrims were most impressed by the St. Clare church ceremonies. The mass and veneration of the relic were carried out in a most dignified, devotional and orderly manner on which the very large numbers present from a very wide area are to be complimented.
Highlight of the trip for many was the wonderful homily on the life of St. Anthony given by Rev. Fr. Mario, who travelled from Padua with the relics.

LADIES DAY
Mná Fiodh Árd / Cill Loiscthe were not found wanting when taking part in the Dublin City Women’s Mini Marathon. A team of nine runners coordinated by Diana Halpin, ran on behalf of the Friends of St. Joseph Hospital Clonmel committee. Donna Reddy, Mary Connolly, Celia Allen, Mary Holohan, Kay Williams, Gemma Burke, Bernadette O’Meara, Sarah Shelley, Ann Coen were the members of Diana’s team. Dolores Costigan ran for South Tipperary Hospice; Catherine and Marguerite Tynan on behalf of the Brothers of Charity; and Ann D’arcy on behalf of the Mater Hospital were the participants we know of from the Fethard, Killusty and Moyglass areas. Congratulations and well done to each and every one and to those who sponsored them.
Congratulating the runners, let us in no way forget the Friends of St. Joseph’s Hospital Committee, a state registered charity, on the wonderful work they are doing in fundraising for many Clonmel Hospital amenities.

The Jackpot remains at €10,000 and next weeks Jackpot sellers prize is €1,000.

REFLECTIONS
A former Clashawley swimmer of sixty years ago enquired do we remember when Eddie King brought the first life jacket ever seen in the area to Fethard. Will we ever forget!
Having served in the RAF, the late Eddie King arrived home with an airman’s life jacket. Word quickly spread about this magic coat, that when worn in the water, kept the wearer afloat. There were many doubting Thomases of the truth of the story. However, when they saw the jacket in action or had the privilege of wearing it, they were certain they were witnessing the eight wonder of the world. How times have changed! The youth of the present time would not be as awe struck if a spaceship landed on Market Hill.

A HUNDRED-TO-ONE
One-hundred-to-one winners are certainly very few and far between on Irish racetracks, especially on provincial tracks like Kilbeggan. Did any of our usually very shrewd local punters, even for local interest reasons, invest a few Euro on ‘After the Ball’.
The 100/1 winner at the recent Kilbeggan meet was bred by Liam Quirke, Mocklerstown, and sold on having won a point-to-point.

FETHARD GAA CLUB

Our senior footballers had a good work-out when they played their County League match against Cahir in Fethard on Tuesday 29th May. The final score was, Fethard 1-12 Cahir 0-4. In the first half, it was an evenly contest with only a point separating the teams at half time on a score line, Fethard 1-5 Cahir 1-4. In the second half, Cahir failed to raise a flag while Fethard added 8 points. On the night it was nice to see Conor McCarthy getting back to form with a personal tally of 1-4. The team was: Paul Fitzgerald, Alan Phelan, Michael Aherne, Tom Anglim, Tomas Keane, Cian Maher, Stephen O’Donnell, Kenneth Byrne, P. J. Aherne, Carl Maher 0-2(F), Miceál Spillane, Willie Morrissey 0-1, Conor McCarthy 1-4 (1f), Brian Coen 0-3, John P Looby 0-2. Subs used were: Kevin O’Donnell, Philly Blake, Philly Croke, Michael Dillon and Brendan Brett. We now have 10 points out of possible 12 going into our last game away to Moyle Rovers on Tuesday 18th June, at 8pm.
Best off luck to Damien Byrne and Aiden Fitzgerald who were selected to play on the Tipperary senior football panel to play Kerry in the Munster semifinal in Tralee on this coming Sunday.
The much awaited South Championship intermediate hurling contest between the two teams who contested the South Final in 2002 proved to be a very one sided affair as Fethard proved to be to strong in all departments after a slow start. Cahir got off the mark with points from James Cantwell and Brian Enright (free) within 5 minutes, the lead was short lived as Fethard, from the 8th to the 25th minute scored 1-7 without a reply — J P Looby 1-1, Brian Coen 0-2(F) Aiden Fitzgerald 0-2 , Miceál Spillane 0-1, and Jamie Mc Cormack 0-1. On the 26th minute, Cahir’s David Coffey scored 0-1(f), but immediately Miceál Spillane got 1-0 followed by a pointed free by Brian Coen to end the challenge.
Cahir fought back in the last 5 minutes of the half to score 3 points James Cantwell 0-1 James Looby 0-1, David Coffey 0-1 (F) to leave the half time score, Fethard 2-8, Cahir 0-6. A second half challenge from Cahir was expected but try as they might they were unable to break down the Fethard rearguard and could only muster 1-1, a goal from James Looby, and a point from a free by David Coffey, while Fethard added 0-11 — Aidan Fitzgerald 0-5, Brian Coen 0-2 (F), J P Looby 0-2, Miceál Spillane 0-1, and Shane Walsh 0-1. Fethard showed patches of the form that brought them the title last year but overall the game was very uneven to give a fair judgement of their potential to retain the title. The final score was, Fethard 2-19 (2-8), Cahir 1-7 (0-6). Best for Fethard were Paul Fitzgerald (goalie), Michael Carroll, Michael Aherne (defence), Aiden Fitzgerald, Brian Coen, John P Looby, and Miceál Spillane (forwards). For Cahir, Brendan Hickey, Brian Enright, and James Looby tried there best.
Fethard team: Paul Fitzgerald, Philly Croke, Michael Ryan, Michael Carroll, Tomas Keane, Stephen O’Donnell, Michael Aherne, P. J. Aherne, Cian Maher, John Paul Looby 1-3, Aiden Fitzgerald 0-7, Brian Coen 0-5 (f), Jamie McCormack 0-1, Miceál Spillane 1-2, Shane Walsh 0-1. Subs used: Michael Costello, William Harrington, Ian Kenrick.
Cahir team: Gerard Burke, James Cantwell, Richard O’Sullivan, Gavin Quinn, David Gorman, James Swords, Pat O’Halloran, Brian Enright 0-1, Liam Kiely, James McGrath, Paul Frazier, David Coffey 0-3(f), James Looby 1-0, Brendan Hickey, and James Cantwell 0-2. Sub used: Derek Lonergan.
In intermediate hurling, we have two wins out of two games played to date. A report on the league game against Ballybacon Grange will be published next week.
Our Sports Lotto Jackpot of €1,300 was not won. We had one ‘Match three’ winner of €150 to Tony Maher ( 56 Woodvale Walk). Our €50 Lucky Dip winner was Lorna Smyth (Claremore). Numbers Drawn (Fethard Arms) were 4, 8, 10 and 17.

FETHARD JUVENILE GAA
It was an extremely busy week for the Juveniles and it kicked off on Monday Bank Holiday with the U/13 Community Game Hurling team travelling to Thurles to play the County Final. These young players came up against an extremely strong and skilled Loughmore team and were unfortunate to be well beaten. They did their club proud and came away with well-earned silver medals.
It was great seeing so many supporters travel to watch the match and the juveniles would like to thank Mick Ahearn, Senior Club Chairman, for making the journey and showing his support.
U/12s began their hurling championship bid on Friday last with a great win over Carrick Swans. This was a really exciting match to watch from start to finish and the final score was 3-10 to 3-3. It was a game that could have gone anyway at any time but the lads kept Carrick at bay and play host to Ballybacon at 7pm in the GAA field on Thursday. Best of luck to all.
The U/14's hurlers played host to Eire Og Annacarty on Wednesday last in a challenge match and also came away with a great win, the lads were down in the first half but came back in the second and showed what they were made of - another great match and a great show of skills.
It was a busy day for the youngest of the juvenile club when on Saturday last we played host to Clonmel Commercials in our U/7 - U/10 age group and both teams came away with 2 great wins, the youngest of young came up to the field and played, and entertained the parents and children who came up to support. Our U/7s final score was 3-1to 1-0, there were great goals scored by Adam Fitzgerald, Tommy Anglim, Gary Bradshaw, and to put the icing on the cake, a great point scored by Jody Sheehan. There was a great display of skills shown by these young players and the club would welcome anyone who would be interested in coming to any of the training sessions. The U/10s also had a great win and the final score stood at 2-07 - 0-02, another great show of skills learnt. The club would like to thank Commercials for travelling to Fethard for these matches.
These youngsters are off to Cloneen on Saturday next to play in challenges and we wish them well, the bus leaves from outside the GAA field at 1.45pm. Any queries you have please phone Club Secretary - Caroline Sheehan - 052 32005.
U/14 footballers had a great win in their championship bid against Killenaule final score stood at 3-10 to 0-5. Well done to all and we wish them well in their next match.

MESSAGES FROM FETHARD WEBSITE
Billy Martley (email: billy_martley@yahoo.com)
My name is Billy Martley and I'm based in Dublin. I'm trying to find out any information I can about my ancestors who came from Fethard. My great-grand father was born Patrick Markley in Kerry St. Fethard in 1884. His father was called William and mother Bridget. It seems that the name was changed to Martley at some stage when my great-grand father moved to Clonmel. Also a lady called Ellen Purtill was present at his birth. I think he might also have had a brother called William. Any information you would be able to let me have would be much appreciated.

Helen Parente (email: hparente@snap.net.nz)
Hi, Just a quick look this time but have book marked for another visit. I’m doing family history and have a few Irish connections, have had success with some thanks to lots of great people, some being 'new' relatives. The internet is just great, I am sitting here in Christchurch, New Zealand, on a cold, overcast, almost dark, Sunday afternoon, and I can travel all around the world and forget what it's like outside, brrrrr!!! I hope maybe that my Connor/O'Connor, O'Rourk/e and McMahon family ties do come from Tipperary area, just starting to unravel the bits of information here in New Zealand, fingers crossed.
