Ms Sarah Crooks Murphy, Burke Street, a native of New Zealand, had a most interesting enquiry recently from her mother in New Zealand. Sarah’s mother’s best friend, as a young girl, said she had a European pen friend called Ann O’Connell, Kilnockin, Fethard, Co. Tipperary. A bit of simple detective work figured out that her friend was Ann O’Donnell, now Ann Lynch, Kilnockin. Ann still has some of the correspondence and photographs from her New Zealand pen friend of almost 50 years ago and now hopes to renew old acquaintances. A small world it certainly is and what an extraordinary connection from 12,000 miles away.
Preliminary notices were read at weekend masses in Fethard Parish Church of a forthcoming diocesan / parish monthly draw. A €2,000,000 fund has to be raised to carry out much needed maintenance work on Thurles Cathedral.
The fundraising project will consist of a monthly draw in which all parishes of the Cashel and Emly diocese will participate. Half of the amount raised by each parish will go towards the Cathedral project and the other half towards their local projects. In our parish the local portion will go towards the equally badly needed maintenance and repair work on Killusty Church and the Parochial House. The cost of the annual ticked is €120 and we need to sell 200 tickets in our parish. Full details of the draw, which commences in October, will be given at a later date.
A sure sign that the year is moving on is the reopening of local schools after the summer recess. The local secondary school reopens this week, first years on Wednesday, fifth years on Thursday, leaving certs on Friday. The national schools reopen week commencing 1st September.
