LEAVING CERT RESULTS
The town of Fethard was overjoyed with the great Leaving Cert results achieved by the students of Patrician Presentation Secondary School. The principal, Mr Ernan Britton, assisted by the retiring Deputy Principal, Mr Paddy Broderick and the newly appointed Deputy Principal Ms Marian Gilpin greeted the students with the good news.
Outstanding results were achieved by a number of pupils, outstripping the National Average. Twins Michael and Paul Walsh achieved 570 points and will pursue a career in Engineering. Rebecca Carroll with 555 points to Veterinary, Jenny Frewen to Architecture, Peter Kenny to Physics in UL and Ann-Marie Tierney and Linda Corcoran to Teaching and Lab Technology. Paul Cleary will also study in Engineering. Well done to all the leaving cert class who did so well. They can be proud of themselves and of their school.

OFF THE MARK
Fethard Jockey Shane Walsh, Grove Road, had his first winner under rules when he rode ‘Rigolade’, winner of the 4 year old 2.5 mile race at Bangor on Saturday. Congratulations and best wishes to this very popular young Fethard rider. His many friends in Fethard racing circles, and beyond, sincerely hope this winner will be the first of many more to come.

FETHARD GAA CLUB
In senior football on Sunday 25th August, we play Cahir in the south semifinal starting in Clonmel at 6.45pm.
Our intermediate hurling game against Kilsheelan played on Friday last 17th August was the best game to date with end to end excitement and thrills galore followed by a fair result on the night, Fethard 1-13 (1-5), Kilsheelan 1-13 (1-5). Our team was: Paul Fitzgerald, Shay Ryan, Michael Ryan, Cian Maher, Kevin O’Donnell, Michael Ahearn, Miceál Spillane, P. J. Ahearn, Stephen O’Donnell, Brian Coen, Tomas Keane 0-1, Aidan Fitzgerald 0-2, Ciarán Treacy 0-1, J. P. Looby 0-2, and Colin Allen 1-7 (4f). Subs used, Willie Morrissey, Owen Doyle, and Jamie McCormack. This result means we have 5 points from a possible 8 with three matches remaining against Davins, Ballybacon and Moyle Rovers .
The minor hurling ‘B’ game played on Tuesday 13th August resulted in a victory on a scoreline, Fethard 4-8 (2-3), Kilsheelan / Kilcash 1-7 (0-3). The team was: Keith Lawrence, Darragh Corbett, William Doyle, Edmond Allen, Gavin Ahearn, Shane Walsh 1-0, Michael Lawrence, Darren O’Meara, Jamie McCormack 0-5f, Ronan O’Meara, Michael Dillon 0-1, Owen Maher 1-0, Alan Burke 0-2, Ronan Maher 1-0, Liam Frewen. Subs used were: Christy Doyle and James Curran. This result means a three way play off for one semifinal spot between Cahir Fethard and Kilsheelan. The draw decided that Fethard plays Kilsheelan on this Thursday 29th August in Clonmel with the winners playing Cahir for the semifinal spot.
The Lotto jackpot of €5,000 was not won. We had three match three winners who received €50 each: James Cooney (Coleman), John Burke (Redcity), Camera Mullins (Farranshea). The €50 lucky dip winner was Mark Tynan (13 Barrack Street). The numbers drawn were 4, 13, 19 and 22.

FETHARD YOUTH CLUB
Fethard Youth Club held its AGM on Saturday, 17th August 2002 in the Fethard Arms at 7pm. The outgoing officers were thanked and the election of new officers was held. We would particularly like to thank Mary Shanahan, outgoing PRO and leader, for her time and efforts over the past two years. We are sorry to see her go but wish her the very best for the future. The newly elected officers are: Tony Askins (chairperson), Maria Murphy (vice chairperson), Clare Hannigan (treasurer), Rita McCormack John (secretary), and Patricia Fitzgerald (public relations officer).
The club year 2002 held the usual variety of local and regional events for our members. These included Self-Defence, Soccer Tournament, Origami, New Year Party and Karaoke, a trip to Foto Island and the annual trip to Oakwood in Wales, and were all great successes.
The regional events attended by our members included the Variety Show and Senior Boys Soccer Tournament where our club came away with trophies and a great reputation for being well behaved and good sports. The girls soccer and table quiz were cancelled due to regional poor organisation but are back on the calendar this year with art, public speaking, young journalist and Xmas card competition.
The Club have had added success and experience when two of our members and a leader were chosen to attend an international exchange on "Underage Alcohol Abuse" in Italy. The workshops were held daily spanning about 5 hours each and the other countries involved were Lithuania and Hungary. The work was extremely intense and made more so by the language difficulties.
However, a web page on the subject was designed in co-operation with all and we now await the funding to get it up and running. Great friends were made and the sightseeing and local environment made all the hard work worthwhile. Again, well done to Ronan O'Meara and Ashley McCormack for representing your Club so well. The club would like to get involved in further exchanges and events and will be working towards that end. We would like to thank all our Members for their enthusiasm and continued support. But most importantly their good behaviour and the manner in which they represent their Club.
We wish to thank the people of Fethard for their ongoing support at our Church Gate Collection and our Table Quiz, without this help we would have difficulty keeping down our club night fees and providing transports to events.
The club will open again this year on Saturday, September 14th. Affiliation for the year will be €10, and our nightly fee will remain at €2. Unfortunately the club will have to close its doors to new membership this year as we do not have the volunteers/leaders to cope with further numbers. If the situation should change, people on our waiting list will be contacted immediately. We are looking forward to another great year 2002-2003.
