THE LATE KITTY SHAW
The death has occurred in Navan on May 24th of Mrs Catherine (Kitty Doyle) formerly Kitty Shaw, The Green, Fethard. The late Kitty Shaw was a very talented pianist and, with Billy Kenrick and Tom Sheehan, a founder member of the Twilight Serenaders dance band so popular in the ‘ballrooms of romance’ of Tipperary in the dancing years of the thirties, forties and fifties. Kitty Shaw, though over 60 years left her native town, she, and the Twilight Serenaders are still nostalgically remembered by patrons of the old Town Hall dancing scene. There is actually still in existence a Nationalist advertisement for a dance in Cashel which says “Music by the Twilight Serenaders, the band that shook Tipperary”.

FIRST SILAGE CUTTING
The first silage cutting of the year took place at Coolmoyne by the Ryan brothers, local agricultural contactors, on May 22nd.

CYCLING NEWS
Congratulations to Raymond Clark, the young Clonmel Cyclist whose father is Sean Clarke formerly from Fethard, on his excellent performance in this year’s ‘FBD Milk Rás’. Riding for the Derry Classic Wall NL Team, Tuesday and Thursday’s stages were the days on which he excelled. With 16 miles to go on Wednesday, he held a lone 38 seconds lead but with no team mate up to help he was caught just at the finish into Castle Island. ‘Courageous Clark’ was the headline on Wednesday morning’s sports pages of one national daily. Raymond on Wednesday was one of a few man group which led the Rás throughout the day. Their efforts were described as greatly contributing to a stage that will eventually find its way into the great Rás legends of which there are many. During the course of this stage, Ray was three primes on the sky-high climbs on the Kerry mountains and took over the ‘King of the Hills’ jersey. The superhuman effort put in by the few riders who drove themselves to exhaustion along the way was shown by drama at the finish line. Twice previous winner of the Rás, Ireland’s Phillip Cassidy, collapsed and caused more than a little worry before recovering. So high was the standard of this year’s Rás, with the cream of Europe’s young cyclists competing, that the best Irish riders could do was to have two riders in the top 10. Ray lost his ‘King of the Hills’ jersey in the penultimate stage from Dungarvan to Bunclody on Saturday. He finished second in his category to Nicholas White of the powerful South African team. The stage included three leg-breaking first category climbs in which Raymond’s powerful solo effort to hold the ‘King of the Hills’ jersey was just not strong enough to hold White.
