CLEAN UP UNDONE
Members of Fethard Tidy Town’s committee were very pleased with the response, especially from the children, to their recent 'Clean Up' campaign, the effort will be continued each Thursday evening starting at 7pm from the Town Hall and covering a different area each week.
It is very disappointing that all their good work was undone by the after the exam 'high jinks' of the leaving certificate students on Friday evening last. Broken eggs and the contents of cans of minerals littered the footpaths. The steps to the entrance of the Tirry Centre seem to have been the worst effected. The students seem to have given scant thoughts to the fact our senior citizens use these steps on a regular basis when visiting the Day Care Centre. The committee were very concerned that one of the visitors could have slipped on the mess and been injured.
Congratulations to the members of the Fethard and Killusty Community Council C.E. Scheme, who recently completed the South Eastern Health Board and Environmental Health Association,, Food Hygiene Certificate Course and Examination. All candidates received first class honours. Those participating included Eileen Barry, Edmund Sheehan, Anne Marie Fleming, Sylvia O’Brien, Catherine Thompson, Ester Breen and James Roche. Well done to all on such a wonderful achievement and result which we have been told is one of the highest in the region to date.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank three members of the team who’s contracts on the scheme have come to an end. Lar Looby, Catherine Thompson and Sylvia O’Brien. Your hard work and contribution to the scheme projects has proved great benefit to many and is much appreciated.
The death has occurred of Mrs Kitty Treacy, Congress Terrace. Interment took place at Calvary cemetery.
The death has occurred of Mr Thomas 'Tom' Leahy, Kilnockin and Leeds. The late Tom Leahy was a brilliant athlete during his boyhood in his native Fethard. He Won County sprint championships at schools, juvenile and youth’s levels in the 100 and 200 yards sprints. He also competed successfully at County Tipperary sports and field days, which were quite common in his time. Tom Leahy’s achievements on the athletic field are often still spoke of by his contemporaries.
He emigrated to Leeds at an early age some forty years ago where his death occurred recently. A most unassuming lad his death following a short illness comes as a great shock to the many in Fethard who still fondly remembered him.
At his special request his remains where brought back to the Augustinian Abbey, where he had served as an alter boy, on Sunday last. Interment took place in Calvary cemetery on Monday.
Fethard Juvenile GAA camp will be held in the Sportsfield this year from Monday July 5th to Friday July 9th, both days inclusive. The camp is open to boys and girls from 5 to 12 years old.
Pupils who have completed 6th class primary school and are entering secondary school in September are also eligible. Fee is £5 per child payable on opening day. Further details may be had from Paula Gahan, Martin and Ian O’Connor or any Juvenile Committee member.
