FETHARD NOTES ARCHIVE

Saturday 25th July 1998

BIRTHDAY PARTY
Fethard Ballroom hosted a great gathering of the Murphy and Morrissey families on Saturday last when a surprise seventy-fifth birthday party was arranged by her family for Mrs. Mary (Murphy) Morrissey, St. Patrick's Place. Eleven of her brothers and sisters, in addition to her own eleven children, twenty of her twenty-eight grandchildren and one great grandchild turned out her to celebrate the occasion. Her sisters Philomena and Nellie from Australia and her brother Willie from England were unable to travel for the occasion. Belated happy birthday greetings Mary.

BEST WISHES
Patrician Presentation Secondary School sends best wishes to its four past-pupils: Tom Anglim, Liam Cronin, Michael Spillane and Brian Burke (captain) and the Tipperary senior football team who will contest the Munster final against Kerry in Semple Stadium Thurles next Sunday "Ye can do it this time".

NOT FORGOTTEN
A man observed cleaning and tidying a hidden long-forgotten grave in Redcity graveyard at the weekend. The inscription on the headstone with the crown above the harp reads "O'Mahoney P. (Pte)" followed by an army registration number and regiment, "Killed in action, France 1915, aged 41".
The grave cleaner, aided by a map from the war office, is a retired British policeman and as he said "to keep myself occupied" he travels around cleaning the forgotten graves of the Irish soldiers of The Great War on a voluntary basis. A strange hobby but a very charitable and worthwhile occupation.

THANKS
South Tipperary Hospice would like to thank the organisers of the Pilgrimage of Prayer, held in the Parish Church and Presentation Convent grounds, who donated the proceeds of their tea and coffee sales to the Hospice Movement. The proceeds realised £156.

GAA
Fethard has supplied many footballers in all grades to Tipperary County football teams over the years. Next Sunday Fethard will be represented for the first time on a county Tipperary Ladies football team. Sarah Gleeson, Brookhill, lines out with the Tipperary U/12 girls football team that opposes Kerry in an inter county girls juvenile football match at Semple Stadium, Thurles. The game will be played during the interval between the junior and seniors inter county games.

ATHLETICS
Congratulations to Jacque Stokes, The Square on winning the ladies All-Ireland long jump championship title at Santry Stadium last weekend. This was Jacques fifth successive win in this event.

WHATS NEW
The recent inclement weather recalls one of the jokes from the old Fethard Pantomimes of the fifties scripted by Eddie O’Neill.
Eddie (The Demon King), "I am going to sing an aria from Madam Butterfly called An Irish Summer" Tom Barrett (Dash, a robber), "There is no aria from Madam Butterfly called An Irish Summer." Eddie: "O yes there is, it’s called One Fine Day."
Well it did sound funny forty years ago.
