FETHARD NOTES ARCHIVE

Saturday 13th June 1998

PHONE MAST
At a packed public meeting held in the Tirry Centre on Monday June 8th a committee was formed to discuss means of opposing the erection of the proposed Mobile Phone Mast at Bennett's Hill. The guest speaker on the night was Colette O'Connell, Dungarvan, who spoke and answered many of the questions raised on the night. The most disturbing fact was the dangers to our health from the radiation from these masts. Colette gave many factual records and examples of the effects already caused in other countries.
The effects of microwave radiation on children and their development is of great concern to the residents of the area. Microwave emissions from Esat masts are far higher than levels recorded in Australia and Switzerland where significant health problems were found with this technology. The committee feel that in the interest of public health and safety mobile phone masts should be located away from residential areas and radiation levels monitored and kept to a level which poses no significant risk to health. The committee stress that they are not opposed to mobile phone technology but would much prefer to wait for the safer satellite system which will be available in a short time. Motorola have currently five satellites in place in preparation for this system.
The committee are now meeting with public representatives and the County Planning Officer. Further information from chairman Michael Kenny, Farranshea, Tel: (052) 31003.
