The recent public meeting to discuss the future of Fethard ballroom attracted a large and representative attendance. Most clubs and organisations in the parish were represented. The meeting was chaired by Michael Smith, Coolbawn.
The hall is community owned, multi-purpose and managed by a voluntary committee.
Peter Grant gave a detailed account of the financial situation, which is rather serious, showing a debit balance of £35,000.
The present difficulties have arisen due to the rising costs of general administration particularly the very high insurance cover charges.
There is also a difficulty in obtaining a bar extension licence which has reduced considerably the ability of the hall to generate profit from social functions.
The meeting agreed that a renewed effort should be made to keep the hall which is of such great benefit to the parish in community ownership.
The following new committee was then elected: David O’Donnell, Gay Horan, Mick Ahearne, Seamus Barry, Paddy Hickey, Peter Grant, John O’Connell, Sean Spillane, Corina Morrissey, Marina Mullins, Breda Kearney.
